Prepare for Emergencies! NERT Training Sept – Nov 2014

seismic house from NERT flyer
Earthquakes happen!

I received this letter from Diane Rivera, Coordinator Chair of the San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT), asking me to spread the word about NERT training.

Please join Mayor Edwin Lee, the Department of Emergency Management and the SFFD Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) in our efforts to reach all the people who live and work in San Francisco to learn about and register for the NERT training.

We find that citizens will take the NERT training outside of their neighborhoods as it fits into their schedules. Please publish all training dates if possible.

The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is free training from the San Francisco Fire Department in how to help you, your family and your neighbors prepare for and respond to a disaster by working together. The 20-hour training taught by First Responders includes personal preparedness, light search and rescue, disaster medicine, shutting off your utilities, and how to participate as a member of a neighborhood response team.

NERT also offers continuing training for graduates and activities that support building robust neighborhood teams. For more information, visit the NERT website at http://www.sfgov.org/sfnert or contact Lt. Erica Arteseros at sffdnert@sfgov.org or 415-970-2022.

NERT Again – December 2012

I got this message about new Neighborhood Emergency Response Training classes for December. All the information is below.

(There’s also a flyer that you can download here as a PDF file and print: NERT flyer dec 2012 )

—————————————————-

We have one more training in December!  Please include this note in your District newsletter and/or add this information to your calendar.

This NERT Training is somewhat central but is for all people who live and work in the San Francisco.  People may live and work in different parts of the city.  This training may fit their schedule!

And…What a great (early) Holiday gift for someone you love, your relative, your neighbor, or your co-worker!  Give them a copy of the NERT flyer (see attached), encourage them to take the training. Tell them the STORY of why to took the NERT training! Tell them how important it is to Prepare, to Mitigate (to make less harsh, less severe and less painful), and let them know that when we face a disaster like the East Coast has just experienced and continues to experience, we will be so much more ready in the Recovery phase and with stronger ability to put our lives back together again!  Surely, no one expected this disaster to hit the East Coast such as it did!

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”

Emergency Response Training, July 10 and 17, 2012

I was sent this flyer today, for the San Francisco Fire Department’s Neighborhood Emergency Response Training being held at UCSF at Parnassus.  It’s for July 10 AND 17th – anyone can attend, but they have to attend both sessions. Here’s the flyer (clicking on it will yield a larger version):

Emergency Response Training via NERT

I got this note from the NERT co-ordinator for the Clarendon area. This is a really worthwhile program, and those who attend these classes do a favor not only to themselves and their families, but also are able to help people around them if there’s an earthquake.

APRIL IS EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS MONTH

Early last month, many of us got a very literal wake up call at about 5:30 in the morning, when a slippage on the Hayward fault jolted us awake. This month, we commemorate the 106th anniversary of the far more devastating quake that hit San Francisco on April 18, 1906. It is a good time to reflect on the fact that we need to be prepared. One of the best ways we can make ourselves ready to help ourselves, our families, and our neighbors in the event of a major quake or other disaster is to take advantage of the free training offered by the San Francisco Fire Department’s Neighborhood Emergency Response Team program.

This training is offered at various locations throughout the city. This May, for those living in Forest Knolls, the Fire Department will provide NERT training just a few block away at 5th and Irving. For more information, see the attached flyer or visit the NERT website at www.sfgov.org/sfnert. You also can call the NERT office at 415-970-2022 to sign up for training or to get more information.

Here’s the flyer. Clicking on the image will take you to a larger version you can print out.

Signal Boost: Free Safety Classes

This was in the Park Station Police newsletter, and was looking for a signal boost. It’s of interest to all of us, living as we do in earthquake country. The SF Fire Department is offering classes in January through early March 2011. Most of them are six-session evening courses; but they also offer a couple of intensive weekend options. The classes are held all over the city. The one closest to our neighborhood is probably in the Sunset, at 5th and Irving. According to the newsletter, more classes will be added later on.

THE LETTER

Subject: Free NERT preparedness and response training by the San Francisco Fire Department

Hello,
My name is Erica and I am the current program coordinator for NERT, the Neighborhood Emergency Response Team.  This program provides instructor-lead classroom training with hands-on components included to prepare San Franciscans for a disaster no matter how big or small.

Earthquake? Power Outage? Flooding on Shotwell Street?  This all hazards approach begins with caring for oneself and family and includes training to become a volunteer emergency responder in your neighborhood.

I am writing to request your assistance to get the word out about this free training opportunity.  We do not have an advertising budget and rely on word of mouth to spread this important information.  We are now celebrating over 20 years of consistent emergency response team training and I still often meet people who are not aware of this opportunity.

New NERT classes are coming up and people should take the training that best fits their schedule.  People can join their neighborhood team upon completion of the training.  Participants should plan to attend all sessions of the training to gain the full scope and benefit.  New students may begin no later than the 2nd week of a six week class and must begin on the 1st day of a two-day intensive class.

There is also a three hour introductory workshop that focuses on personal preparedness.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide in telling people about NERT training.
